Briefing
Nothing is more thrilling than reality.

Is every day life everywhere the same? Is a day on the southern hemisphere similar to one on the northern?

We intend to document one day all over the globe. 24 hours in different countries, which allow us an insight in the other cultures.

Photography, graphics, animation or video– choose freely your way of working.

so why and whom to complain
about the sand
that is slipping out of my hand,
or your sky which has now decided to be different then mine.

Project title: Gebrauchsspuren – Understanding the science of handling materials (traces of usage)

Introduction: According to Buddhism’s belief the three realities are – nothing lasts, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect. 

Every material with time and usage changes and gets a ‘used form’. Scratch, dent, fade, cracks are different ways we leave traces of usage on materials. Some of these traces are greatly desired for example faded jeans and some are not desired example a dent in the car. A lot of circumstances along with users are responsible for the intensity of the evidence of usage of a product. Every product has its function and so is handled or used in a particular way hence we find products with similar function wearing out in a particular fashion. In this way every product gets its ‘used form’  

Other creative ways of using a product, other than its original function for which it was made, also gives a different ‘used form’ to it.  For example flex hoardings are reused to make shopping bags, nail cutter is used as opener etc.

Scope of working direction

Tracing evidences of usage on variety of products/materials and categorizing them to find out which of these worn-out look are desirable and which are not. Therefore, finding out if there is any scope of creating a desire of the worn-out look in the new product/design.

 Need

-This research is important for tracing the difference between the “used form” and “new form” in order to create an optimum “new design”

-This will also help us to know the user’s mindset and their preference about a particular look and feel

-This will even provide a gateway to study and compare the handling of materials across different cultures

-This might provide opportunity for developing designs and products accordingly

Expected learning:

-In depth observation, analyzing and understanding the subject

-Contextualization, connecting cultures and creativity

-Understanding mindsets and users expectations.

Methodology and strategy:

Spanning 8 weeks

- Research of previous work in similar context eg. Wabi Sabi and contemporary connotations of the ‘worn-out look’

-To collect examples of handling marks and reuse of different materials / products

-Analysis and study of collected examples to find possibilities and opportunities

- If possible to compare similar examples from other culture

- Compilation of research findings

- Documentation

This course has a lot to do with a common emotion amongst the group.

Why looking for common emotion??
Answer: Its only when one have a feeling or a strong emotion about some thing one is able to express to his/ her fullest.
and so the design will reflect the best expression. 
• will be well understood within the group and keep us connected
• we will be able to see others point of view on the same subject.

and so we had to find what is the one common emotion that we all are sensitive towards.

About the group :
• around 7 people
• majority females
• Extremely diverse group (2 chinese, 1 from England, 1 from Sweden,
1 german, 1 Japanese, and me from India )

after a short discussion we found that we all our talking about our country and we r so attached to our country
and we all love traveling and traveling has become like a need

hence, we get our common theme that is ” traveling “

* and here traveling is not limited to just ur mother country. Its a place which u have visited and u feel like visiting again n again ( so basically a place that u r attached to ) 

next step was to pick 10 Photographs from our trip to any place which we r attached to. ( photographs clicked by us )

then we put all pictures together in group and we noticed:
• a lot of verity and diversity in the pictures
• many of them have one point perspective shots
• strong color palates of different places.
• almost all of them have lines which give a direction to the picture
• Different types of windows.. windows can have many meanings
• contrast
• water
• light and sun glair
• Common skys but different blues

now we had to boil down to a word that could be our topic
and the word is ” Fernsucht “

yeh! the word is in German and I had to crack first the correct Dictionary meaning and then different meanings that I understand from this, or to me what is my self expression about fernsucht.

In the class I had collected a lot of hints of what this word means.
every one said something new but close to the real meaning
its never possible to translate this exactly and so I did a mind mapping on a paper with a lot of people apart from the course

the google translator said ” Looking Away “

but it surely doesn’t mean this.

The dictionary says ” Far + addiction “
which i feel is a bit better and close to what ppl mean

and now while brainstorming and with others help i find a few meanings which sounds better

* please note there r manny words which have just come up as a personal expression and not nessery the word means exactly the same
.Its like mind mapping.

Fern sucht ……travell obsession…….craving to travell………..opposite of home sick…………Cabin fever………..way out……..travell freak……..carried away……….the endless road……..road is pulling you towards it ……….road is calling ……….Open Space………Memories of the place calling u back…………motion movement from one place to another ……….. flying ……….. migration…….. capture memories …..capture every moment plus experience……… attracted towards a place ……… mesmerism ….. Illusion….. mirage….. etc

the next step is to make 2 mood boards in 30 x 30 inches on the topic “fernsucht”

These are my mood boards (before these there r many visual attacks on paper and then we choose the strong ideas and present individually.)

traveling is all about movement 

moving from one place to another is represented by the orientation of boxes.

the swirl brings in the gravity …..which may be a bird experiences when they decide to fly and migrate on the same time of the year.

the swirl can also mean for the viewer “capture” like shutter in a camera

and at last the single bird out of the box in the right top conner represents the “no boundary”, “enjoying own space” and the satisfaction.

the paper planes(being the only manmade object ) represent humans ….. and their wish to be close to nature and free like dolphins and migrate like birds.

the wish is also about covering and experiencing every thing under the blue sky .

now the next step is to …… Find best fit options where in u can intertwine ur expression about “fernsucht”

example : environment design, exhibition design, packaging, theme for watch company ….etc

* It is not only about some company or logo or some visuals it could be any thing that justifies and fits ur idea.

phew ! after a long time ……with a twist in story

THE PICTURE BY FAR 

there r 2 groups of one class

1. Fernsucht group 

2. nostalgia 

the group 1. process is 1st crating a form with the topic and subtopic (topic=fernsucht, sub topic= connect n disconnect  in my case ) 2nd  create  visual language ……   they way it suits ur topic the best.

the group 2 . the process is to first create visual language …then form

so basically i start with form first

the next class we go with some thoughts over the fernsucht topic

i thought of this as day dreaming  …. example when cabin fever creeps in mind its always possible to day dream and be some where else …if its not possible to physically go away 

we all might have experienced this phase of day dreaming that takes u away from where u r ..a complete disconnection for that moment 

in classroom this is a very common thing to happen   …….u dont even hear professor yelling your name to get u back in the class

through this thought i pick up “connect + disconnect ” or “existing +non-existing”  to be the core idea in my forms

then i categorized them to find which of them have an emotional appeal

the idea here is like the stars in sky -

• one has to gaze in sky for long and concentrate to connect and form objects out of it ….but once u r distracted or u loose ur concentration u even loose the connection that formed that object in stars

• stars connects different places …..

• travel freaks usually have an eye on them as stars helps navigation and find directions.etc

the loops is where i thought of  how vogue our thoughts are or our dreams r they have hardly a connection with another like fr example i start thinking of my work then suddenly i start thinking about my pen and then suddenly i recall lammy pen’s craze then bauhause then germany then back to work and i complete the loop of my thoughts 

so this is some what like pattern of thoughts that take u for a ride 

form development is next on the way ……
